Going Tribal: African Shields

In the past, African shields were designed to offer protection during combat. Small, lightweight shields offered greater mobility for close combat, and large, heavier ones provided more protection during ground battles. The patterns and designs on the shield indicated the person’s rank and status on the battlefield, as well as the ethnic group he belonged to.

Shields were also used as accessories in initiation, funeral, and dance ceremonies. A variety of materials were used like animal hides which provided strength and durability; wicker, a lightweight material used for weaving; wood which was sculpted into smooth shapes and carved with designs, and metal. Pity these glorious shields can’t protect us from the relentless sounds of the vuvuzelas.

World Cup Soccer Shakers

Like it or not, you will shortly be immersed in World Cup insanity, and it’s always more fun to play along. I’ve never been a soccer fan, but something mysterious happened to me during the 2006 World Cup, and before I knew it my kids were covered in tattoos, and I had a flag hanging off my car for the duration of the games. I’ve had four years to recover from this out of character behaviour, and I think I’m ready to embrace the insanity again. If you happen to be a parent of young soccer loving children, these customized shakers will add to their fun and help them cheer on their chosen team. It is, after all, the most popular sport in the world. Cheers!

Puzzling Invitations

This is a terrific idea for a birthday party invitation and if  your child is old enough to write, he or she is old enough to proudly enjoy making these on their own. And now, a word of advice anonymously lurking on the internet and worthy of sharing, if you didn’t already instinctively know:

“Let Us Spray”

A joy of which I’ll not partake
Is eating children’s birthday cake.
To “blow out” candles, in a word,
Is really patently absurd:
Each puff contains sufficient moisture
To propagate your av’rage oyster.
So, Birthday-Boy and ditto-Daughter,
Withhold from me your whiff of water.
I do not need some little squirt
To atomize on my dessert.
Among the things I will not do
Is have my cake and drink it, too.

Careful What You Wish For

The New Year tends to fill us with the inexplicable need to explore what are usually short-lived activities, hence my new blog. And what better way to welcome you than with an introduction to my son’s version of the Family Portrait. That would be me on the upper right, bearing a disturbing resemblance to the Venus of Willendorf. On the left, as you can see, I very clearly have a husband, and below are my two children who are responsible for motivating me to do this. If I hadn’t had little ones to scrunch crêpe paper with, my creative radar would be out of order, and I would most likely be found decomposing in an uninspiring  job with ‘rescue me’ stamped on my forehead.

My goal is to post fairly consistently about arts and crafts projects for children; naturally, adults can play too. Some projects are my own, inspired by what I see around me, while others have been done a million times over but are still worth exploring. I hope you’ll be inspired to make something and look forward to your feedback; successes and disasters welcome. Thanks for visiting.
