It seems once you enter the world of acrylic mediums, there’s no turning back. They’re highly addictive because they alter paint in such neat ways. They create distortions, crackling effects, and produce all kinds of textures and finishes. This time, I was lured into trying out Pouring Medium to create some wonderful drippy marbling effects on white pumpkins. It turned out to look quite cool.
Materials
- white pumpkins
- acrylic paints in orange, black, white
- Liquitex Pouring Medium
- paint brushes
- small bowls or paper cups for mixing paints
- wooden skewer
Instructions
1. Clean and dry an assortment of white pumpkins.
2. Liquitex Pouring Medium helps to make acrylic paint drip easily onto whatever surface you are working with. It also allows you to create interesting marbling effects, and enables the paint to dry to a flexible, glossy finish. To prepare paint, add a small amount of colour in a bowl. Add the pouring medium and mix well with a paint brush. Mix gently to avoid creating any bubbles. You only need a small amount of paint (approximately 20%) to pouring medium (approximately 80%). Do this for each colour you will be using.
3. There are several ways you can drip paint onto the pumpkins. You can load a paintbrush with colour, apply it around the stem and direct the paint to flow down the naturally occurring grooves on the pumpkin. You can also put the paint mix in a squeeze bottle. Finally, you can mix the colours in paper cups which can be squeezed to form a spout, making it easy to pour from.
4. Once the first colour has been added, others can be applied in the same way. To create marbling effects, simply use a pointy object like a wooden skewer to gently swirl the colours together. Allow to dry for at least a day, and expect the unexpected. Some of the colours and patterns will not be exactly the same once dry. If you look at the photos below, you’ll see there was much more orange paint on the large pumpkin, which ended up looking somewhat greenish once dry. Who knew!
