Dioramas are 3D scenes created in box-like containers, and a spooky Halloween theme is perfect for this time of year. It’s a great opportunity for kids to make a miniature world filled with skeletons, ghosts, and a few imaginary characters of their own.
Materials
- container eg. cigar box, shoe box, kleenex box
- scissors
- glue stick
- glue gun
- assortment of craft supplies like construction paper, felt, googly eyes, toothpicks, glitter glue, styrofoam balls, etc.
- small Halloween decorations like skeletons, spiders and ghosts
- printed or drawn images of tombstones
- cobwebs
- paint
- battery powered tea light
Instructions
1. The best and most durable containers are cigar boxes because they are made out of wood. They are surprisingly easy to come by at smoke shops, and are usually free. They also come with lids which you can choose to keep on or remove. Shoe boxes are the next best thing and in a pinch, kleenex boxes will do. Just cut the top off and you’re good to go.
2. Most of the supplies for this can be be found at dollar stores, or from your own collection of Halloween decorations. Images of tombstones can be printed from the internet or drawn by children. And since you’re working with a Halloween theme, orange, white and black should be the dominant colours used.
3. Start off by dealing with the background. In this diorama, we painted the inside of the box black, and used orange felt for the bottom. Construction paper is also a great choice, and can easily be glued down. Aside from the obvious decorations, have kids try and come up with some imaginary characters, like the little googly eyed guys we made using toothpicks and a styrofoam base. Glue guns are great for attaching googly eyes, and glue sticks are perfect for the rest.
For a really cool effect, add one or two battery powered tea lights to make your diorama even spookier.

Nice! I remember making diorama’s for school projects. I loved it but I never thought of making one as an adult for home decor. Now I want to. This is great!

I was thinking about a gingerbread haunted village for the kids to make, but that’s expensive. The kids eat most of the candy and what survives is too unsanitary to eat later. This idea is the perfect solution!
