Vintage Key Necklaces

Necklaces with keys have become a very popular trend, and look wonderful whether you’re using vintage keys or copies. I found these ones while visiting a flea market in the french countryside, and after a little scrubbing, turned them into necklaces. It’s easy to do, and fun scouring bead shops for things to add on.

Materials

  • chain, cord, or ribbon
  • keys
  • add ons like beads, ribbons, etc
  • clasps, jump rings, etc
  • needle nose pliers
  • wire cutters
  • scissors

Making Your Necklace

While I’d love to call these skeleton keys, it turns out they’re not. True skeleton keys are like master keys, able to open many locks because of the way they bypass the wards (obstructions) inside. Some are bit keys, with a solid shank, while others are barrel keys with a hollow shank. Either way, most of the keys we think are skeleton keys have been designed to open only one lock, and are therefore just plain old bit or barrel keys.

Vintage keys can be found at flea markets and antique shops, while bead shops have more recent versions, along with all the other supplies you’ll need.

I added clasps and found them very easy to attach. Just make sure you have a good pair of needle nose pliers to add the various parts. Knots also work well, and will be easier if young children are making the necklaces themselves. You can also consider taking apart old jewelry you’re no longer using, to supply you with beads, etc. Have fun!
